Daigo Ji, Kyoto, Kinki – Japan

In Buddhism, it is believed that it’s every person’s lot in life to suffer and feel less than satisfied. These are things we all experience at one time or another, although some to a greater degree than others, as they are universal. Desire and attachment are the culprits responsible for this state of affairs. However, even the deepest, most soul-wrenching suffering can be ended forever by successfully pursuing the Noble Eightfold Path of right thinking, speaking, living, and understanding that Buddhism aims to teach.

There are many Buddhist temples in the world so exquisitely designed as to make the end of all suffering and restlessness seem deliciously possible and Kyoto’s Daigoji Temple is an incredible example of that beauty at work. This shot captures Daigoji at the height of spring, late in the afternoon just before the sun began its daily descent toward the horizon. The air was heady and fragrant with moisture, mystery, and the scent of green growing things. The atmosphere was one of peace — perfect, pure, and timeless. It was quiet and serene, yet there was also a silent, lovely energy about the place – an energy that reminded me of home.

Nestled there within the trees at the top of a short flight of stone steps, Daigoji looked as comfortable and content as it did inviting the beautiful spring day there in Japan. You could easily believe that it held the answers to life’s great mysteries and dilemmas. Even more importantly, you could believe that such complex abstractions would suddenly become simple if you’d only accept the temple’s invitation to enter, learn, and be. Just a short jaunt – over the graceful curvature of a bridge painted red and up the cool, firm steps of stone out front – and you’re there. You’re eternal and at one with all that’s most beautiful in this universe.
