Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park, British Columbia – Canada
When you spend much time out in nature, life takes on a strange quality. Although you’re still very aware of your usual collection of worries and cares, they also often seem refreshingly far away right there in that moment. The fresh air in your lungs, the sun on your skin, and the exquisite sight of all the natural wonders around you are just that much larger and more present. In other words, it’s not hard to see why time spent communing with Mother Earth is so widely considered medicine for the soul.
Daydream was captured on Emerald Lake in the beautiful Canadian Rockies of British Columbia. It was late in the afternoon on a summer’s day. As sometimes happens in heavily wooded areas during the summer, the entire Rockies were plagued with runaway bush fires. Although such fires are a part of the natural order of things to some extent, it’s still impossible not to feel intense anxiety in a situation like that. It’s also difficult not to be worried for the countless trees around you, not to mention all the wildlife that calls the forest home.
However, this particular afternoon brought with it a welcome respite from that anxiety. It rained for a just a little while, helping to quench the nearby fires and filling the smoky air with the freshness of summer rainfall. The rains were brief, but incredibly welcome, and they left behind a gorgeous rainbow. The scene on the whole was truly the stuff dreams are made of – this amazing, majestic landscape with fires burning in the distance, kissed and heartened by seasonal rains. Places as beautiful as the Rockies already make it so easy to believe that there is more to this world than what we see, but when something like that rain is sent exactly when it’s most needed and hoped for, that possibility seems absolutely certain.
