Closehaven Marina, Port Douglas, Queensland – Australia

We’ve all heard of the calm before the storm, but have you ever stopped and paused to actually observe the real thing in action? There’s just something about the world right before a hurricane, tornado, or major storm is about to begin. It’s so quiet and still that even the word quiet doesn’t seem strong enough to describe what you’re experiencing. Everything around you is calm and even beautiful in its stillness, but almost too much so. The air feels pregnant and electric with the promise of what’s to come, although that in and of itself possesses its own unique beauty.

Hemingways was captured during a very real period of pre-storm calm in Port Douglas’s Closehaven Marina in Queensland, Australia. It was late in the afternoon on a balmy summer day. The air was steamy and lush as one might expect in a place with a natural tropical climate. According to the weather report, a cyclone was on its way. Everyone was already informed and prepared for what was coming, so all that was left to do was wait.

You’d never know that Port Douglas was quietly expecting a possible natural disaster though. The placid waters of the marina had never been more serene and the sky was a beautiful blue canvas gently streaked with feathery white clouds. Some thicker, heavier clouds in the distance were really all that hinted at what was to come. Just past the marina, you can see Hemingways Brewery and Pub, a delightful place to stop for a pilsner and some appetizers after a day filled with fresh air, sunshine, and beautiful sights. As I waited for the storm to roll in along with everyone else, I couldn’t help but notice (and admire) the impossibly still scene before me, an idyllic symphony of blues and whites watching… waiting.
