Twelve Apostles, The Great Ocean Road, Victoria – Australia
Beaches are remarkable in that each has its own distinct identity it brings to the table. Some are wide open and bright, seeming by their very nature to invite visitors to sit, absorb their vibrant energy, and be part of the scenery for a while. Others are secluded, quiet, and more than a little bit mysterious. Such beaches are also inviting, but in a completely different way. When you get the impression a beach like that is inviting you to stay and spend your time there, you feel almost as if you’re in for a bout of enlightenment, transcendence, and perhaps the sharing of secrets that are thousands of years old.
The majestic limestone stacks known as the Twelve Apostles punctuate an expanse of the beach of Port Campbell National Park, giving it that mysterious, timeless feel in spades. Although there is much to love and celebrate about a trip down the Great Ocean Road, the few that remain of the original Twelve Apostles are arguably the most famous part of the experience. The way they punctuate the shoreline and seem to gaze far out to sea gives a trip to this beach a clandestine feel. You get the impression you are only moments away from witnessing something sacred or magical, as if the very sky itself is preparing to open up.
‘Rendezvous’ was captured at sunset on a brisk winter’s day. The sky in the distance hung heavy and pregnant with an approaching rain storm. As the sun began to sink below the horizon, it lit up the sky and kissed the brilliant blue waters. The clouds above became awash with unbelievable colors. As heavy violets, flirtatious lavenders, and just the barest accent of optimistic lemon came out to play, the 12 Apostles looked on knowingly and expectantly. I could only wonder what they were watching, waiting, and preparing for.
