If you’ve ever had the good fortune to visit a lavender farm when it’s in full bloom, then you don’t need to be told why lavender is so strongly associated with time-honored concepts like grace, serenity, elegance, and calmness. Row after row of powdery purple blooms evoke feelings of wonder and awe at the majesty of Mother Nature. Perfumed air heavy with the scent of the blooms puts your mind and spirit alike right at ease.
Capturing the unparalleled experience of blossoming lavender fields had been a dream of mine for many years. I always pictured the experience happening in one of France’s world-famous fields, but then an ideal opportunity to capture an early summer bloom at Tasmania’s Bridestowe Lavender Estate presented itself. The Secret Garden was captured at sunrise on New Year’s Day in 2019. As the lavender rolled gracefully over the surrounding hills in the first golden light of morning, a lone stately tree stood sentinel over the scene as it welcomed the new day.
