‘The Division’ was captured during a visit to Great Otway’s majestic Triplet Falls. It was late in the morning on a winter day, just before the day shifted to afternoon. Seasonal rain had been falling abundantly, so the falls were flowing as strongly and plentifully as ever over the rocks, crashing with gusto into the river below. The air had that clean winter crispness to it, but it was also quite lush-smelling and alive thanks to the rushing falls themselves and the multitude of trees growing nearby. Standing there, my ears full of the music of rushing water, I found myself thinking that Eden itself couldn’t possibly have been more beautiful or seemed so pregnant with possibility.
From where I stood that winter’s afternoon, I noticed a cluster of trees standing so close together, they almost seemed to divide the falls in two. They looked like so exactly like a close group of lifelong friends, passing the time together by sharing secrets. They were just one example of how everything in this place seemed to be profoundly alive, nourished and supported by the rich medicine of the falls. Stately trees, velvety moss, graceful ferns stretching their fronds in every direction – all of them present, each leaf and tendril doing its part to fill the air with the most delicious green perfume.
