Crawley Edge Boatshed, Swan River, Western Australia – Australia

The city of Perth in Western Australia is well known for its beautiful, clear days and abundant sunshine. Also famous for being the most isolated city in the world, Perth is situated in a gorgeous area, literally surrounded by natural wonders. On one side, there’s the sprawling Australian outback with its red earth and diverse wildlife. On the other are the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean.

Even so, there is such a thing as too much sunshine, even in Perth. Drought has been an issue for Perth in recent times, so many of the people that lived there pray fervently for rain. Their prayers were answered and then some the day Dances with Lightning was captured. A solid month’s worth of rain fell steadily over the course of a single weekend. The arid land surrounding Perth could finally breathe again as the heavens soaked it thoroughly in cool, clean, lifegiving rainwater.

The building seen here is Crawley Edge Boatshed, a privately-owned Perth fixture. The simple Boat House with its cheery blue paint and white trim always seems simultaneously curious and contemplative as it sits peacefully at the tail end of a long pier. This autumn day, it seemed watchful as well and with good reason. As can often be the case at dawn, there was a homogenous feel to the light and the colors that day. Bone white lightning streaked across the navy sky again and again.

The skies and the waters below were as blue as the walls of Crawley Edge Boatshed. The air was heavy and damp. It smelled mossy but electric as the lightning, terrible and thrilling all at the same time. This was Mother Nature at her most powerful and impressive. I couldn’t help but stand awestruck as I took it all in, hoping to capture it.
